walk down that lonesome road

walk down that lonesome road all by yourself
don't turn your head back over your shoulder
and only stop to rest yourself when the silver moon
is shining high above the trees

if i had stopped to listen once or twice
if i had closed my mouth and opened my eyes
if i had cooled my head and warmed my heart
i'd not be on this road tonight

carry on
never mind feeling sorry for yourself
it doesn't save you from your troubled mind

walk down that lonesome road all by yourself
don't turn your head back over your shoulder
and only stop to rest yourself when the silver moon
is shining high above the trees

-- "that lonesome road," which is my all-time favorite james taylor song (well, except maybe for "sweet baby james"); but on this peaceful saturday morning, i heartily suggest you listen to the dixie chicks belting it sweet and strong, from deep down in their bellies.

193: not ready to make nice

i spent 2001-2008 kind of in a political rage. it began when bush was given the election in 2001 and continued when he started the insanity that is the war in iraq.

the dixie chicks, a band that i wasn't particularly interested in following, mostly because i'm not a fan of country music, made the "mistake" of saying out loud on stage what i was screaming at my television/radio every night. and they suffered for it with a drop in sales (which is unfortunate for them, but at least civilized) and death threats from stupid, blind to what was really going on in the world, asshats (less civilized).

when this album came out, in solidarity, i bought it. and played this song over and over again in my car, really loudly.

not ready to make nice

Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I?m not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I?m still waiting

I?m through with doubt
There?s nothing left for me to figure out
I?ve paid a price
And I?ll keep paying

I?m not ready to make nice
I?m not ready to back down
I?m still mad as hell and
I don?t have time to go round and round and round
It?s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn?t if I could
?Cause I?m mad as hell
Can?t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I know you said
Can?t you just get over it
It turned my whole world around
And I kind of like it

I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I don?t mind sayin?
It?s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they?d write me a letter
Sayin? that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

I?m not ready to make nice
I?m not ready to back down
I?m still mad as hell and
I don?t have time to go round and round and round
It?s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn?t if I could
?Cause I?m mad as hell
Can?t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I?m not ready to make nice

Wide Open Spaces

View On Black

18/52 - 52 Weeks for Dogs
- - - -
As part of the 52 weeks project, I want to get some photos of Gyp in her natural surroundings at different times of the year. Right now everything is starting to green up. Maybe in the summer I'll shoot something from near here again to see the difference.

And this song (Wide Open Spaces) came to mind:

Who doesn't know what I'm talking about
Who's never left home, who's never struck out
To find a dream and a life of their own
A place in the clouds, a foundation of stone

Many precede and many will follow
A young girl's dream no longer hollow
It takes the shape of a place out west
But what it holds for her, she hasn't yet guessed

She needs wide open spaces
Room to make her big mistakes
She needs new faces
She knows the high stakes

Shut Up & Sing travels with the Dixie Chicks from the peak of their popularity as the national-anthem-singing darlings of country music and top-selling female recording artists of all time, through their infamy after the anti-Bush comment made by the group?s lead singer in 2003. Oscar-winning documentary director Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck follow the Dixie Chicks from 2003-2006 when they were under political attack and received death threats, all while continuing to live their lives, have children, and of course make music. At a time when the United States is fighting for democracy and freedom overseas, Shut Up & Sing raises questions about our own right to freedom of speech and documents the difficulty of having a genuine public debate on international policy in the political climate leading up to the Iraq War. The film also illustrates musicians? power to influence and inform the public discourse on significant policy issues. Michael Rechtshaffen praises Shut Up & Sing in The Hollywood Reporter: ?A bracingly candid documentary portrait of the artists in a career-defining transition, the film simultaneously offers a unique perspective of a nation at a similarly significant crossroads. It also happens to be a lot of fun.?
